Wucai (five-color) lidded jar decorated with celestial horse motifs, Ming Dynasty, from the collection of the Palace Museum [Photo/Palace Museum official website]

This lidded jar from the Jiajing reign (1522-66) of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) is covered entirely in overglaze wucai (five-color) decoration, with red and green taking center stage and yellow, black, purple adding depth and dimension to the scene. Around the body of the jar, four celestial horses leap and race through a sea of clouds. Banana leaf motifs adorn the neck, with intertwining lotus scrolls along the shoulder, and stylized lotus petals near the foot. Collection: Palace Museum.
