Captured in a fleeting moment, this court painting from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) portrays a graceful white horse glancing back over its shoulder. The horse, named Wanjishuang (万吉骦), was celebrated as the foremost among the "Ten Steeds of the Forbidden City".
With delicate strokes, the artist Giuseppe Castiglione (Lang Shining, 1688-1766) masterfully renders the horse's expression and the soft texture of its coat. Subtle highlights and shading bring the powerful muscles to life, giving the animal a vivid sense of strength and vitality. Collection: Palace Museum.
