A magnificent scene of a Tang Dynasty (618-907) royal hunting expedition is captured in the Hunting Procession mural from the tomb of Crown Prince Zhanghuai (Li Xian, 655-684), in Qianxian county, Xianyang, Shaanxi province.
The mural features more than 40 mounted riders, two camels and five ancient trees set among rugged rocks. Hunters are armed with bows and arrows, some holding falcons, some carrying hounds, others leading trained cheetahs and lynxes. Every figure is delicately and vividly portrayed, offering precious insight into royal leisure of the High Tang period. Collection: Shaanxi History Museum.
