A first for the Palace Museum: Its historical architectural complex and cultural legacy designated as the nation's foremost protected heritage site

In 1961, the former imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties – known as the Forbidden City and serving as the foundation of the Palace Museum – was included in the first batch of China's foremost protected cultural heritage sites.

This designation by the State Council highlights the exceptional historical and artistic value of the palace's architecture complex, which has stood in the heart of Beijing for over five centuries.
