Martyr Yang Angong (1898-1927) was a pioneer of the Chinese communist revolution, an early leader of military affairs within the Communist Party of China, and the founder and outstanding leader of the Party’s early organization in Sichuan. He played a leading role in the Luzhou-Shunqing Uprising in 1926, together with Zhu De (1886-1976), Liu Bocheng (1892-1986), and Chen Yi (1901-72). After the “March 31 Massacre” in 1927, he was unfortunately arrested by Sichuan warlords and was executed on April 6. His revolutionary thought and heroic deeds had a profound impact on his younger brother, Yang Shangkun (1907-98), who served as the fourth president of the People’s Republic of China (1988-93), a great proletarian revolutionary and an outstanding leader of the Party, the state, and the people’s army.
Yang Angong’s former residence, built in 1848, not only witnessed the childhood life and growth of the two brothers, but also vividly recreates the glorious life of Yang Angong through an array of images, artifacts, and other displays at three permanent exhibitions: The Life and Deeds of Martyr Yang Angong, Restoration of Daily Life in the Yang Family Residence, and The Party’s History in Tongnan District During the New Democratic Revolution Period (1919-49).
The former residence of Comrade Yang Shangkun, constructed in 1862, also known as “Changtanzi Courtyard”, is his birthplace. After renovations in 2007 and 2021, it features a large permanent exhibition, which chronicles the life and achievements of Yang Shangkun with nearly 400 photographs, over 200 artifacts, documents, and videos, highlighting his role in national liberation, development, and reform.
The two former residences, together with several other adjacent historical sites, including Yang Angong’s cemetery, Yang Shangkun’s cemetery, the Yang Family residence in Chongqing’s Tongnan district, Zhang Penghe’s Integrity Culture Education Base, and the Sage King Yu’s Palace, are important sites for honoring Yang Angong and Yang Shangkun’s great contributions, learning from the integrity in office of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) official Zhang Penghe (1649-1725), and carrying out education relating to patriotism, revolution, national defense, clean governance, and family traditions.
