Miao ethnic parade welcomes autumn in Hunan

Tens of thousands of people joined in a grand parade of the Miao ethnic group earlier this month to welcome autumn at Pailiao village in Huayuan county of Xiangxi Tujia and Miao autonomous prefecture, Hunan province. [Photo by Song Xiaojin/for chinadaily.com.cn]

The event is about expressing gratitude for ancestors and wishing for good weather, harvest, and life.

The parade was accompanied by a fair offering Miao clothes, food, agricultural products, and intangible cultural heritage handicrafts.

"We set off from Huaihua at 5 am for this," said Yang Lan, a tourist. "I heard the deafening drumbeats at the entrance of the village and saw Miao women welcoming tourists with rice wine. It was more spectacular than I imagined!"
