Have you read a book today? Let this mythical beast from the Qianlong reign (1736-95) of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) deliver one to you! This exquisite jade qilin is crafted by round carving with head looking back, its mouth spouting swirling clouds and its back holding books with fluttering ribbons.

According to legend, when Confucius was born, his mother dreamt of a qilin that brought books – an omen of a remarkable life to come. Symbolizing wisdom and good fortune, this jade carving is now housed in the Palace Museum.
