Can you spot the mythical creatures on this jade masterpiece? This Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220) jade screen, assembled from four intricately carved jade panels, is the earliest and only one of its kind ever discovered.
On the upper panel sits the Queen Mother of the West (Xiwangmu), flanked by feathered immortals, vermilion birds, foxes and three-legged crows. The panel below features the King Father of the East (Dongwanggong), elegantly seated with bears, black tortoises and feathered figures beside him.
Discovered in 1969 in the tomb of Liu Chang, King Mu of Zhongshan in Hebei, this treasure now resides in Dingzhou Museum. It offers a rare glimpse into the spiritual world and beliefs of Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) people.
