The tradition of eating zongzi originated in 340 AD, when the poet Qu Yuan sacrificed himself for his country by drowning. To prevent fish from devouring his body, people tossed zongzi into the river as an offering, making it a quintessential delicacy of the Dragon Boat Festival.
