The latest version of the Peking Opera work The Imperial Consort of Tang will take to the stage at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center on Dec 9 and 10. Produced by the Shanghai Jingju Theater Company, it depicts the tragic love story between the Xuanzong Emperor (r.712-56) and his beloved concubine Yang Yuhuan (719-56) in the Tang Dynasty (618-907), and is based on Mei Lanfang’s representative piece Anecdotes of Yang Yuhuan.
