This research was led by the National Institute for Communicable Disease Control and Prevention of the China CDC and completed with other agencies and organizations.

The project won the first prize at the Science and Technology Awards of the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association and the second prize at the Chinese Medical Awards in 2019.

Streptococcus suis (S. suis) sequence type (ST) 7, which is so far found only in China, has caused large outbreaks of human infection.

The research project isolated and identified the S. suis ST7 strains from clinical samples, and completed the etiological investigation report for the outbreaks in a very short time. In order to discover the pathogenic mechanism, evolution, transmission and epidemic features of ST7 strains, extensive studies were conducted and four theories were proposed based on the results.

In all, 60 papers were published in authoritative journals in the field of infectious diseases, earning 1,776 citations and an editorial comment in the Journal of Infectious Diseases. Three highly cited reviews about the findings have been published so far. In addition, the first international workshop on Streptococcus suis was organized in Beijing in 2013 to promote international collaboration and research in this field.
