The first museum of its kind in China to highlight Hakka culture, this institution covers an area of 37,000 square meters and is composed of eight branches, including the main hall, the Huang Zunxian Memorial Hall, the Meizhou Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum, the Meizhou Overseas Chinese Museum and four others.

The permanent exhibition of the main hall consists of two parts. The first tells the grand story of the Hakka people, including their origins, history, development and current lives, while the second focuses on the formation and humanistic landscape of the Meizhou branch.

In memory of the renowned Hakka patriotic poet and diplomat, the Huang Zunxian Memorial Hall is comprised of his former residence and study within the surrounding neighborhood. Also located in the neighborhood area, the Meizhou Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum showcases 365 items to fully illustrate the colorful local culture and customs. Meanwhile, the Meizhou Overseas Chinese Museum exhibits the pioneering history and patriotic contributions made by the Hakka overseas Chinese, with a large number of detailed historical materials, pictures, texts and various precious cultural relics.

Primarily derived from public solicitation and private donations, the collections of the museum are varied and include products from the Cheyao Kiln of the Tang Dynasty (618-907), painting and calligraphy works by Hakka celebrities, and other folk cultural items of different types. Ancient books are generally from the private collection of Huang Zunxian (1848-1905).
