In accordance with a State Council rule on electric power system reform, China Southern Power Grid Co was officially launched and put into operation on Dec 29, 2002. It is a centrally-administered company, with the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC) performing duties as its investor. The company provides electricity to Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou and Hainan, takes charge of investment, construction and operation regarding the power grids in the southern parts of the country, provides power transmission and distribution services, and participates in funding, constructing and operating related cross-regional power transmission and networking projects. It also buys and sells electricity and is responsible for power trading and dispatching. Besides, it offers investment and financing services at both home and abroad, and engages in independent imports and exports, international cooperation, foreign-related contracting of projects and foreign-related labor cooperation.

The company’s headquarters has 22 departments, two directly affiliated institutions, namely the HQ Logistics Management Center and the Annuity Center, and three branch companies engaged in ultra-high voltage power transmission, peak shaving and frequency regulation, and education and training (CSG Party School and CSG Executive Leadership Academy). It has 13 wholly-owned subsidiaries – power grid companies in Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Guizhou and Hainan, power supply bureaus in Guangzhou and Shenzhen, CSG International, Dingxin Technology, Dingyuan Asset Management, CSG Materials & Equipment Co, Capital Holding Co, and CSG Energy Academy. It also controls six other subsidiaries – CSG Research Institute, CSG Energy, CSG Finance, Dinghe Insurance, CSG Media, and Guangzhou Power Exchange Center.

Southern power grids extend approximately 2,000 kilometers from east to west, covering a variety of sources for power generation, including water, coal, nuclear, pumped storage, oil, gas and wind. The company has made a series of internationally advanced research achievements with independent intellectual property rights in developing technologies for security, stability and control of power grids, cost-effective operation of power networks, and system integration and application. Among these, the “independent technology development and engineering practices concerning packaged design of HVDC transmission projects” won the first-class prize of the National Prize for Progress in Science and Technology in 2011, signaling CSG’s world-leading position in ultra-high voltage power transmission.

CSG has been listed as a Class A company in performance reviews by SASAC for 11 consecutive years. Also, it has been among the Fortune Global 500 companies for 13 consecutive years, currently ranking 100th.
