The career of late artist Luo Gongliu (1916-2004) reflects a lifelong artistic exploration closely intertwined with the destiny of the nation and the needs of his times. Many of his works have become iconic images in the collective memory of 20th-century China.

Exploration and Mission: An Art and Document Exhibition of Luo Gongliu, now on view at the National Museum of China in Beijing, pays homage to the artist's prolific career. It brings together works from various collections, including those of his family, the NMC and the Central Academy of Fine Arts, where he taught for decades, alongside manuscripts, photographs and other archival documents.

The exhibition traces Luo's unwavering artistic exploration, beginning with his early years as an ambitious young artist creating woodcuts. The medium was popular among socially conscious young people and was championed by prominent scholar and writer Lu Xun as a means of expressing social concerns and ideals.

Luo later trained as an oil painter, using the medium to document the country's revolutionary history and socialist construction.

In his later years, he continued to reinvent himself, drawing on the aesthetic traditions of Chinese art and producing works markedly different in style from his earlier creations.

The exhibition offers a glimpse into the journey of an artist deeply engaged with China's cultural development and the evolution of its art education.
