On Tuesday, the Jiangsu Performing Arts Group’s Xiju Opera Troupe presented the classic The Pearl Pagoda at Gengsu Theatre in Nantong, Jiangsu. The story follows scholar Fang Qing’s hardships, his cousin Chen Cui’e’s secret gift of a pearl pagoda, and his eventual success and witty rebuke of his snobbish aunt.
Xiju Opera, also known as Wuxi Opera, is a traditional Chinese opera originating in the Wuxi and Changzhou areas of Jiangsu province. Popular across the Taihu Lake region and parts of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Shanghai, and Anhui, it is known for its graceful melodies and distinctive cultural charm of Jiangnan (the southern regions of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River).
