What message did a swan goose carry 3,000 years ago? This Western Zhou Dynasty (c.11th century-771 BC) bronze swan goose-shaped vessel is more than a wine or water vessel. In ancient China, swan geese were ceremonial gifts, symbolizing respect and courtesy.
With its head held high, the swan goose forms the body of the vessel, while a round opening on its back and a beak-like spout create a wonderfully lifelike design.
Its 44-character inscription records the diplomatic mission of an envoy named Pu from the state of Ying to the state of Xing — offering a glimpse into diplomatic exchanges during the Western Zhou period.
Unearthed in Pingdingshan, Henan province, in 1988, the vessel is now housed at the Henan Museum.
