A durian-themed cultural event has wrapped up in Xi'an, bringing together Thai and Chinese communities through food, traditional performances and interactive activities. Centered on Thailand's popular Monthong durian, the annual event showcased how cuisine can bring people together and strengthen cultural ties between the two countries.

Now in its 10th year, the festival was held with the support of the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Xi'an. Visitors enjoyed authentic Thai flavors, cultural experiences and opportunities to connect with Thai residents and local communities, highlighting the growing cultural exchange between China and Thailand.

Benjamas Tanvetyanont, consul general of the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Xi'an, said that Thailand's iconic Monthong durian has become a favorite summer fruit among Chinese consumers. More than a delicacy, she noted, it has become a symbol of the growing cultural connection and friendship between the two countries.

The regular operation of the China-Laos-Thailand cold-chain railway has significantly shortened delivery times, allowing fresh Thai durians to reach Chinese consumers more quickly and strengthening trade and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.

At the event, Chen Zhiyong, consul of the Royal Thai Consulate-General in Xi'an, introduced Thailand's traditions, customs and culinary culture, offering guests a closer look at the country's rich heritage and the cultural connections between China and Thailand.

The Silk Road Bloom Organizing Committee said it will continue to organize food and cultural events that bring people together through shared culinary experiences. By making cultural exchange more accessible and enjoyable, the initiative aims to deepen understanding and strengthen ties between China and Thailand.

Guests rolled up their sleeves to make their own durian pizzas, learning about the seasonal specialty while kneading dough, adding toppings and baking their creations. The interactive experience showcased the fusion of Thai ingredients and Chinese culinary creativity.

While the pizzas were baking, participants took part in activities such as basic Thai language lessons, traditional dance workshops and quizzes on Thai culture and cuisine. The sessions offered a fun way to learn about Thailand's traditions, durian cultivation and the shared cultural connections between China and Thailand.

Now in its 10th year, the annual durian-themed event has become a popular platform for cultural exchange, bringing people together through food and shared experiences.

Building on its Silk Road heritage, Xi'an will continue to expand cultural exchange through food and community events, strengthening people-to-people ties between China, Thailand and other Belt and Road partner countries.
