Ordos, a major energy-producing city in North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, is accelerating its transition toward a cleaner, smarter, and more innovative energy system, said Vice Mayor Wu Jianxun at the 2026 Modern Energy Economy (Inner Mongolia) Thinker Forum on June 30.
Utilizing its abundant reserves of both traditional and renewable energy, Ordos has expanded its renewable power capacity while developing a comprehensive new energy equipment manufacturing chain.
More than 60 leading companies in wind, solar, hydrogen, energy storage, and new energy vehicles have established operations in the city, bolstering production capacity across key sectors.
Production capacity has reached or is approaching 10 GW for wind power equipment, 85 GW for photovoltaic cells and modules, 63 GWh for energy storage equipment, 1.43 million metric tons for battery cathode and anode materials, more than 20,000 sets for hydrogen energy equipment, and 350,000 new energy vehicles annually.
The city is also strengthening renewable power transmission and local consumption by completing two long-distance power transmission lines and advancing four ultra-high-voltage transmission projects to expand cross-regional electricity delivery.
The promotion of zero-carbon and low-carbon industrial parks is also encouraging the direct use of green electricity and the integration of renewable energy into sectors such as metallurgy, advanced manufacturing, big data, and intelligent connected vehicles.
To further accelerate the transition, the city is expanding its hydrogen industry by promoting technologies such as hydrogen-blended coal power generation, pure hydrogen gas turbines, and hydrogen-based chemical production.
Wu said Ordos will continue to foster new growth drivers through digital technologies, the industrial internet, and AI, aiming to provide a model for high-quality, green development while contributing to China's energy security.
