Xi'an holds international symposium on cultural heritage conservation

The first China-Italy International Academic Symposium on Cultural Heritage Conservation and Valorization was held in Xi'an from June 22 to 24.
Sun Qingwei, president of Northwest University, said that the university attaches great importance to cultural heritage research. Relying on its distinctive disciplinary strengths, it has made significant contributions to fields such as Silk Road archaeology, scientific conservation of cultural heritage, and digital display of cultural relics.
He said he hoped that participating experts will take the symposium as an opportunity to further deepen exchanges and cooperation between universities, scientific research and cultural institutions in China and Italy, advance resource sharing and joint platform construction, explore new concepts, new methodologies, and new pathways for the conservation of cultural heritage, and make new contributions to promoting exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations.
During the speech session, Zhan Changfa, former vice-president of the China Academy of Cultural Heritage, discussed talent training approaches for cultural heritage conservation and restoration.
Professor Grazia Semeraro from the University of Salento presented research and conservation work carried out at the archaeological site of Hierapolis in Turkiye.
Zhang Xiaotong, a researcher at the China Academy of Cultural Heritage, exchanged insights on talent training practices in the conservation of immovable cultural relics.
The symposium also featured two sub-forums on "cultural heritage conservation practices and talent cultivation" and "conservation philosophies and technologies". Participants exchanged views on the conservation and restoration of cultural relics such as bronze wares, lacquer and wooden artifacts, as well as the digital reconstruction of heritage sites.
They also shared practical experience in curriculum development, restoration teaching, vocational skill training, and preparing heritage professionals for the era of artificial intelligence.
