US visitor recites Chinese classic to win free ticket to Huaqing Palace

During the Dragon Boat Festival holiday, a US tourist John Klump recited the full text of theSong of Everlasting Sorrowon stage at Huaqing Palace in Xi'an without any prompts, earning a free ticket to the scenic area. His name was recorded on the placard at the attraction, and he received a replica of an ancient pass document.

Klump has been studying Chinese for more than 10 years, and has lived in China for eight years, dedicating himself to the exploration of classical poetry. He traveled to the site to participate in the scenic area's special event, aiming to visit all attractions in China that offer free admission for reciting poetry. It took him two to three years to master the entireSong of Everlasting Sorrowtext.

Huaqing Palace has long promoted a poetry recital-for-free-entry initiative, where visitors who independently and fully recite a Chinese poem can gain free access to the site.

In 2025, Xi'an implemented a program to develop its "City of Tang Poetry" cultural brand, using attractions such as Huaqing Palace to host poetry readings, educational workshops, and immersive performances.

The live-action dance drama, theSong of Everlasting Sorrow, which has been staged for over two decades, serves as a centerpiece for showcasing local culture to the world.
