A dragon, a fish, a maiden, and a bird – all in one artifact!
This unique white-glazed ewer from the Liao Dynasty (916–1125) blends multiple cultural traditions into a single elegant design. Its dragon-headed spout and fish-shaped body form the mythical Makara, while the head of a maiden and bird-like wings evoke the Buddhist Kalavinka.
Unearthed in Chifeng and now preserved in the Inner Mongolia Museum, this remarkable vessel, serving as a water dropper in a study, is a testament to the rich cultural exchanges of the past.
