Over 60 metric tons of waterproof products manufactured by Xi'an Meinan Biotechnology Co will soon set sail across the ocean for Guyana in South America via the Port of Qingdao in Shandong province.
New eco-friendly water-retentive and waterproof materials developed by Meinan Biotechnology have gained access to markets in over 40 countries and regions, including the Middle East and South America. Their applications range from desert ecological management to deep-sea protection and space exploration.
"Most traditional waterproof materials are petroleum-based extracts, which are environmentally unfriendly to produce and deliver unsatisfactory waterproofing performance," said Li Xiaobo, the company's CEO.
To address this bottleneck, the company developed an innovative new powder material sourced from non-metallic minerals that is inherently green and low-carbon. Its production process generates no wastewater, waste gas, or solid waste. The raw material cost is only 50 percent to 60 percent that of conventional petroleum-based materials, and the material maintains stable waterproof performance under extreme temperatures ranging from -5 to 250 C.
The company's high-quality products garnered attention from the international market upon their launch. In July 2023, the company established a presence in Airport New City, and its production line was put into operation in October. In less than three months, it signed a procurement contract worth $300 million for waterproof sand and water retaining agents with an Emirati enterprise to support local desertification control.
The company secured a 100-million-yuan ($14.72 million) order for desertification management and waterproof engineering projects in Turkiye in 2024. In 2025, it signed a 100-million-yuan order with Kazakhstan and reached cooperation intentions with 15 enterprises in Dubai, building up a wealth of potential orders.
"The total value of our overseas orders has exceeded 2 billion yuan, forming a global sales layout centered on the Middle East. Right now, our production capacity is fully stretched," said Li.
The company launched the construction of a green new materials industrial cluster park in Airport New City in August 2025 with a total investment of 1 billion yuan. The project is scheduled for completion in 2027.
Once completed, the park will establish a full industrial chain integrating R&D, production, and sales. It will house 14 production lines, with an annual output of 120,000 tons of new materials and an annual output value exceeding 2.5 billion yuan, helping break the company's production capacity bottleneck.
