Intl media delegation: Fuzhou's ancient lanes reimagined for modern life

A media delegation of over 40 international and domestic journalists and influencers visited Fuzhou, Fujian province, on March 7 to explore the city's historical districts and cultural preservation efforts. The visit, part of the "Perceiving Happiness: Tour of China's Fujian" initiative, focused on the integration of traditional heritage with modern urban life across several landmark sites, examining how the city preserves its architectural legacy while promoting economic development.

The delegation toured the Sanfang Qixiang (Three Lanes and Seven Alleys) historical district where they visited the former residence of Yan Fu, a well-known scholar and translator in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), and engaged with local intangible cultural heritage, including Min Opera performances and traditional culinary crafts. These sites illustrate Fuzhou's adaptive reuse of turning historic structures into active cultural spaces.

At the Shangxiahang historical and cultural block, the group observed traditional tea-making techniques and participated in a Three Knives hairpins styling session, a traditional Min-style hair arrangement. The itinerary highlighted the city's diverse tourism offerings and its efforts to improve residents' quality of life through heritage conservation.

One CGTN journalist said that Fuzhou's approach balances the preservation of ancient buildings with contemporary public needs. By revitalizing historic neighborhoods, Fuzhou has created a sustainable model for cultural tourism that remains grounded in daily local life.
