Guilin aims to utilize the growing micro-drama industry to elevate its international profile and accelerate its transformation into a world-class tourism destination, according to a proposal discussed at the city's annual political consultative sessions.
Wen Qing, a member of the CPPCC Guilin Committee and producer of China Media Group, proposed building Guilin into China's "city of landscape micro-dramas." She pointed out that the city's world-renowned assets – including the Lijiang River, Longji Rice Terraces, Ming Dynasty heritage, and iconic local foods like Guilin rice noodles and Gongcheng oil tea – provide an ideal backdrop for short-form storytelling.

To maximize this potential, Wen proposed a "one county, one signature brand" strategy to create a comprehensive digital communication network. By producing high-quality micro-dramas tailored to specific local stories, the city can comprehensively showcase its unique cultural and natural characteristics. She also recommended hosting industry forums to cement Guilin's presence in the short-video sector.
"Micro-dramas can serve as a new engine for city branding, a fresh gateway for cultural tourism consumption, and a new track for digital economy growth," Wen said.
She expressed her hope that these premium short series will bring the beauty of the Li River to screens worldwide, ultimately turning online traffic into offline visitors to support Guilin's long-term tourism development.
