The fifth session of the 14th Inner Mongolia Autonomous Regional People's Congress opened on Feb 4 in its capital, Hohhot, to review major achievements during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–25) and outline key development goals for the upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30).

Over the past five years, Inner Mongolia delivered solid, high-quality growth, with the region's economic output reaching 2.67 trillion yuan ($384.44 billion) and per capita GDP ranking among the top eight nationwide. The added value of industries above the designated size grew at an average annual rate of 7 percent, while the production capacity of more than 80 products – including rare earth compounds – ranked first in China.

As a key national energy base, Inner Mongolia maintained annual coal output above 1.2 billion metric tons and supplied more than 3.5 billion tons of coal to 29 provinces during the 14th Five-Year Plan, leading the country. Its power transmission volume has ranked first nationwide for 21 consecutive years, and its intelligent computing capacity reached 220,000 petaFLOPS, placing it among China's frontrunners.

Agricultural modernization also made steady progress: the region constructed 62.81 million mu (4.19 million hectares) of high-standard farmland, with peak annual grain output reaching 42 billion kilograms, ranking fifth nationwide. Output of milk, beef, mutton, forage grass, and cashmere all remained at the top nationally.

Innovation capacity continued to strengthen, with Inner Mongolia's regional innovation ranking rising to 20th nationwide. Transport connectivity improved significantly, with 483 air routes linking 116 cities.

Ecological protection and restoration delivered landmark results. A total of 123 million mu of restoration was completed, including 66.88 million mu of desertification control, both ranking first nationwide.

Meanwhile, the region created 1.06 million new urban jobs, and per capita disposable income exceeded 40,000 yuan.

Looking ahead to the 15th Five-Year Plan, Inner Mongolia aims to maintain per capita GDP and residents' income in the upper tier nationwide, underscoring a continued focus on high-quality development, shared prosperity, and sustainable growth.
