I Am a Delivery Driver: A Sensory Diary of a Scorching Summer

This soundscape work is based on delivery drivers' real-life experiences. Actors Jiang Yushan, Wang Zihao and Li Yansheng spent their summer as delivery drivers, carrying recording equipment to document their entire working process in extreme heat. The piece is constructed with on-site sounds: from incessant cicada chirping and customer order notification sounds to hurried footsteps and gasps as they navigate between sweltering heat and the cold environment. It culminates in the fleeting silence after a frantic dash up stairwells. The actors' interactions with their environment and the delivery system (including dialogue and breathing sound) are preserved unadorned. This piece is not merely an environmental recording but a 'sensory diary' created through direct bodily engagement and recording. The work aims to immerse listeners in the auditory experience, enabling them to perceive the physical exertion, time pressure and glimmers of humanity within the delivery drivers' labour in the sweltering heat, thus achieving a resonance rooted in the soundscape.
