As winter temperatures continue to drop, Donggu Lake in Central China has become a haven for wildlife, transforming into what conservationists describe as a "five-star hotel" for migratory birds.
Donggu Lake in Yueyang, Hunan province, is a renowned birdwatching site. Recently, tundra swans have been seen gliding across the water with the grace of ballet dancers, drawing crowds of visitors and photographers.
Situated along a migratory path for numerous bird species, the Donggu Lake area boasts exceptional wetland conditions and biodiversity. In recent years, efforts have been made to restore and protect the wetlands, including ecological restoration, the adoption of green farming practices, and scientific adjustments to agricultural structures. An ecological reserve was established in 2017, with an investment of more than 7 million yuan ($1 million).
Since 2019, more than 5,000 tundra swans, along with large numbers of white cranes, gray cranes, and other birds, have wintered in the area each year. The tundra swans are a nationally protected species in China, known for their high requirements for water quality and environment. They arrive at the lake every November.
