At Hejiaying village in Xi’an, Shaanxi province, ancient melodies roared back to life as drum music troupes gathered for the 18th Xi’an Drum Music Festival on Nov 22. Using instruments like gongs, cymbals, flutes and sheng (a free-reed wind instrument), performers revitalized this “living fossil” of Chinese music — rooted in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) court traditions and honored on UNESCO’s heritage list.
