The fleet of Zheng He (1371-1433) first set sail from the Yangtze River Delta in China to the open sea 620 years ago, embarking on a voyage that became an epic of peaceful international exchange. These maritime envoys became cultural ambassadors, bringing back exotic treasures such as Jiangzhenxiang agarwood, sandalwood, pepper and cinnamon—once cherished, highly sought-after goods in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
This year, the "Love Yunnan: Zheng He Cultural Exchange Event" welcomed friends from Cambodia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Pakistan and beyond, to Guandu Ancient Town in Kunming, Yunnan province. At the Lyuxuezhai Cultural Gallery, they experienced traditional craftsmanship in an immersive setting. From fragrant sachets to artisanal demonstrations, they explored the enduring warmth and wisdom of 620 years of cross-cultural exchange, celebrating Zheng He’s legacy and the bonds between nations.
