This year marks the 145th anniversary of the birth of Li Shutong (1880-1942), also known as Master Hongyi after his ordination as a Buddhist monk in 1918. A legendary figure of early 20th-century China, he was a pioneer of modern drama and an influential art educator.
At the Tianjin Museum, a commemorative exhibition displays precious artifacts and historical photographs, tracing his artistic achievements and contributions, his days as a teacher in Hangzhou, his time of becoming a monk and his friendships later in life. Li Shutong's life continues to inspire.
