The ongoing exhibition Splendor of Skirts at the Tsinghua University Art Museum in Beijing explores the enduring appeal and contemporary resonance of the Mamianqun (horse-face pleated skirt), a type of traditional Chinese skirt. From the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) to the present, the aesthetic evolution of the Mamianqun is condensed in 66 exquisite pieces. Come to experience the enduring charm of the skirt that embodies the essence of Chinese elegance.
The name Mamian (literally "horse face") is a reference to the architectural design of a defensive city wall buttress, symbolizing the secure, structured and formal look of the skirt's front and back panels.
