At first glance, this piece might look like a standing dumbbell — but it's actually a celadon lamp from the Northern Qi Dynasty (550-577). It is composed of three parts: the lamp bowl is decorated with eight-petal upright lotus motifs; the long, cylindrical stem is adorned with three sets of bead pattern bands alternating with bow-string patterns; and the base is shaped like an inverted basin, embellished with eight-petal inverted lotus motifs.
Unearthed from the tomb of Lou Rui (531-570) at Wangguo village, Taiyuan city, Shanxi province, the lamp is a treasure now housed in the Taiyuan Museum.
