Hohhot's exhibition booth drew crowds with its distinctive offerings – grassland beef and mutton, dairy products, sea buckthorn juice, and quinoa – at the 2025 National Agro-Products Production and Marketing Conference (North China Region) held in the city on Sept 6.
The event provided a vivid snapshot of Hohhot's efforts in recent years to deepen the entire agricultural and animal husbandry value chain, build regional brands, and expand sales channels.
Using its rich natural resources and strong agricultural foundation, the city has developed a complete industrial chain covering cultivation, breeding, processing, and sales. Key products such as potatoes, corn, coarse grains, beans, and cool-season vegetables have been cultivated into signature brands.
Wuchuan potatoes and oats have received national geographical indication certification, while in 2025, Wuchuan's oat-based dryland farming system was selected as a candidate for the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems list by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
Hohhot's grassland beef and mutton are renowned for their tenderness and rich flavor, while the city dairy industry – anchored by leading enterprises like Yili and Mengniu – has become a national powerhouse.
The city also prioritizes building efficient circulation systems for agricultural products. To date, it has established seven wholesale markets covering more than 40,000 square meters, 48 farmers' markets exceeding 600 sq m, and over 3,000 retail outlets, providing smooth channels for product distribution.
In 2024, Hohhot's primary industry achieved an added value of 17.33 billion yuan ($2.43 billion), up 5.1 percent year-on-year, with total grain output reaching 1.95 million metric tons, a 3.0 percent increase.
