Today marks the first day of the autumn semester for schools across China. Let's take a look at a Shoushan stone carving work from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). On its front, a stairway leads to an ancient academy and nine lively figures unfold in four scenes: children playing beneath pine trees with an elder; children whispering secrets; a curious kid peeking from under the eaves; a student bowing respectfully to a teacher.

On the reverse, a single-eaved hall sits among rocky mountains and pines, echoing the Chinese tradition of situating academies in secluded, serene landscapes. Collection: Nanjing Imperial Examination Museum of China.
