Taiwan was returned to China after World War II. In June 1946, however, the Kuomintang armies launched a concerted attack on the liberated areas led by the Communist Party of China, and a large-scale civil war started. Defeated in 1949, the KMT retreated to Taiwan. As a result of the war and the interference of external forces, the two sides of the Taiwan Strait have fallen into a state of protracted political confrontation. Yet the bonds of kinship across the Strait have never been broken, and the fact that both sides belong to one China has never changed. Follow the documentary series, Stories across the Strait, to uncover the true history.
