Nantong TCM practitioner shares expertise overseas

Tang Limei, deputy chief TCM physician at Nantong Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Jiangsu province, is instrumental in advancing TCM in Malta as a member of the 20th Chinese (Jiangsu) medical aid team to the country.

At Mater Dei Hospital's Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) clinic, Tang recently introduced TCM principles to a second-year medical student from the University of Malta. The student, eager to learn acupuncture, coordinated with the hospital to study under Tang's supervision. Each morning, he observes her as she moves between two busy consultation rooms.

Due to the high demand for acupuncture sessions — booked two months ahead and fully booked daily — Tang created a plan for him to memorize two acupuncture points each day. This approach helps him transition from theoretical understanding to practical skills. "TCM is not mysticism; it is wisdom validated over thousands of years," Tang said, noting that more international enthusiasts are discovering TCM firsthand.

This "teach a person to fish" philosophy reflects the goals of Chinese medical aid teams abroad, which focus on training local healthcare workers through clinical mentorship and technical education.

The rising popularity of TCM in Malta, evidenced by high clinic demand and the efforts of foreign apprentices, is no coincidence. From ancient Silk Road exchanges to modern collaborations under the Belt and Road Initiative, TCM's integration into global health continues to grow.

Today, TCM is available in 196 countries and regions, and its recognition by the World Health Organization, including traditional medicine in its international disease classification, highlights its mainstream acceptance.
