This Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) five-color ceramic plate from the Zhangzhou kiln features ocean-themed motifs – the typical style of Zhangzhou export ceramics. Around its rim are painted mountains and pavilions, while the body brims with constellations, islands, waves, sailing ships, flying fish, and a mythical qilin. In the center lies a 24-pointed compass encircling a yinyang motif and an inscription of the Chinese words tian xia yi (number one under heaven).
As a national first-class treasure, it's not just beautiful but also a key artifact for studying Ming Dynasty maritime history. Collection: Zhangzhou Museum in Fujian province.
