Nanping Nanci, a traditional narrative singing art that originated in East China's Fujian province in its northern Nanping region, traces its roots back to the Jiaqing period (1796-1820) of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The art form evolved from Suzhou-style Nanci (or southern lyrics) that migrated from the Jiangnan region, gradually blending with local folk melodies to develop its own very distinctive style.

Performed by a lead singer accompanied by instrumentalists playing various traditional instruments, Nanci features role-based vocal alternations within its seated ensemble. The art took root in Nanping during the late 18th century, when renowned troupes like "Jingyi Xuan" emerged. Having flourished with nine generations of practitioners over two centuries, Nanci demonstrates remarkable artistic vitality and has profound traditional values.

However, this cultural treasure now faces critical challenges — including a lack of successors and diminishing audiences — requiring urgent preservation efforts to safeguard its future.
