Incomplete statistics show that in the first half of 2025, venues under Xicheng’s "Reading Harbor" brand hosted more than 800 events, including exhibitions, lectures and book signings, across the district. The monthly reading gatherings and the public-interest lecture series "Master Lectures" and "Guided Tours of Traditional Culture" have proved especially popular.
The Reading Harbor brand events are marked by active public engagement and diversified development. Many operators have rolled out services such as reading points redeemable for coffee and exclusive member reading lists, integrating reading with leisure and social settings and attracting readers across age groups, particularly the young.
Program design caters to the diverse needs of different age groups: there are the ancient-book restoration workshop for seniors, the science-fiction writing camp for teenagers, time-management lectures for white-collar workers, and the picture-book drama workshop for parents and children.
Venues also draw on the district’s distinctive cultural resources to expand reading scenarios. Beijing Epigraph Museum invites specialists to explain the history and culture embedded in bronze inscriptions; inside the Grand View Garden (Daguanyuan), scholars lead readers through the world of the classic novelDream of the Red Chamber; the White Pagoda Academy stages a "swap-a-book" market; and Yanse Reading Space hosts parent-child picture-book reading sessions.
According to the Xicheng District Reading Promotion Center, it will optimize plans to better engage society in the Reading Harbor events and enrich the reading ecosystem of Xicheng.
