In October 1934, the First Red Army was defeated in Chiang Kai-shek’s Fifth Encirclement Campaign and was forced to embark on the Long March, departing from Yudu, Ganzhou, Jiangxi province.
The Yudu History Museum of the Central Red Army’s Departure for the Long March is the only museum in China dedicated to the history of the Red Army’s departure for the Long March. Situated to the east of the Monument to the First Ferry of the Red Army’s Long March in Yudu county, the museum consists of thematic sculptures, the new Long March Square, a monument, and a memorial hall. It serves as a venue to commemorate the great achievements of the revolutionaries and promoting the spirit of the Long March.
The museum’s permanent exhibition is set on the second floor of the memorial hall, using artifacts, texts, photos, sound, lighting, and multimedia to vividly present the Red Army’s preparations and departure from Yudu, as well as the selfless support of the local people. The display is organized into five sections, including “The Background of the Long March”, “The Secret Preparations for Strategic Transfer by the CPC Central Committee”, “The Gathering in Yudu”, “The Night Crossing of the Yudu River and the Start of the Long March”, and “The Eternal Long March”. Together, they provide a full picture of this historic event.
The museum holds 2,174 valuable artifacts, including 1,010 revolutionary pieces and 625 historical items, mostly from Yudu. These include the weapons used by the Red Army, their daily necessities, and military route maps. Each item bears witness to the Long March and reflects the hardships endured during the Long March.
