Nantong in Jiangsu province has recently announced its new urban renewal action plan for the next three years, according to local media reports.
This initiative made Nantong the first city in the province to carry out a second phase of urban renewal after the national guidelines were released.
It seeks to improve the city's layout, boost its functionalities, and promote residents' well-being.
The 2025–27 action plan outlines 16 key sectors in Nantong, emphasizing nine main areas and about 1,000 projects with an investment estimate of 50 billion yuan ($6.98 billion). Compared to the prior plan, these projects include new areas like culture, sports, and marine city development, all aimed at making Nantong more livable by 2027.
In the initial phase of urban renewal, Nantong allocated nearly 100 billion yuan. The outcomes were notable: 101 historic neighborhoods within the city were revitalized, five projects received recognition as provincial demonstration pilots, and three innovative approaches were listed among national and provincial replicable practices.
A notable example is the Nanchuanyuan Community in Chongchuan district, which has established a party and mass service center, a community canteen, and a 24-hour convenience station, providing services such as elderly care, childcare, and domestic assistance.
