US teens explore Tang Dynasty pastries, tea art in Zhenjiang

The "Discover Jiangsu" American Youth Exchange Program was held at Zhenjiang Vocational Technical College on June 23, with 26 US students and teachers immersing themselves in Chinese traditional food culture through a hands-on experience.

The highlight of the day was the making of delicate pastries with peach blossom and snowflake designs inspired by the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Captivated by the intricate craftsmanship, the US teens eagerly participated in every step, from kneading and shaping to decorating, striving to recreate the ancient charm of these elegant treats.

To assist with the experience, trained Chinese students served as instructors. Despite language barriers, they guided their US peers with patience, using expressive gestures and simple English to help them complete the process.

Participants also enjoyed a demonstration of tea-whisking technique from the Song Dynasty (960-1279). The performer's fluid movements and refined skills captivated the audience, offering a glimpse into the depth and beauty of traditional Chinese tea culture.
