The Memorial Hall for Victims of the Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders was built on the site where the remains of the massacre victims were discovered. It was opened to the public on August 15, 1985. As a national first-class museum, it has served as the venue for the national memorial ceremony for the victims of the Nanjing Massacre since 2014.

The Memorial Hall covers a total area of 103,000 square meters, with an exhibition area of nearly 20,000 square meters. It includes the Sculpture Square, the National Memorial Square, the Exhibition Hall, the Mourning Square, the Burial Ground Square, the "Pit of Ten Thousand Corpses" site, the Memorial Ceremony Area, the Hall of Reflection, and the Peace Park.

The memorial features the permanent exhibition The Historical Facts of the Nanjing Massacre, the thematic exhibition Justice Shall Prevail, Peace Shall Prevail, the People Shall Prevail—An Exhibition on the Victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the Trials of Japanese War Criminals, and a special exhibition on the victims of the Japanese army’s “comfort women” system in WWII. These exhibitions aim to guide the public to remember history, never forget the past, cherish peace, and strive for a better future.

The memorial institution engages in international peace exchange activities and has received millions of visitors from more than 100 countries and regions. It has publications in English, Japanese, French and other languages worldwide.

The memorial has hosted historical exhibitions on the Nanjing Massacre in over 30 cities across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Through the Nanjing Massacre archives -- list in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register -- it promotes the message of remembering history and safeguarding peace.
