The National Martyrs Cemetery is located at Xiaotuan hill slope, on the banks of the Dieshui River, one kilometer southwest of Tengchong, Baoshan, Yunnan province. Completed on July 7, 1945, the cemetery covers an area of 5.87 hectares.
The National Martyrs Cemetery was built to commemorate the fallen soldiers and military officers of the 20th Group Army of the Chinese Expeditionary Force who died during the 1944 campaign to retake Tengchong. The cemetery's main structures include the main gate, exhibition hall, Shrine of Loyal Martyrs, soldiers’ graves, and memorial tower.
Integrated within the cemetery, the Memorial Hall of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Japanese Aggression in Western Yunnan offers a more comprehensive portrayal of the heroic resistance in western Yunnan. It serves to honor the unyielding national spirit, and provide deeper insights into the war’s history. It also plays an important role in remembering the fallen and offering prayers for peace.
The National Martyrs Cemetery stands as a solemn tribute to the soldiers and officers of the Chinese Expeditionary Force. It is the only large-scale memorial cemetery in Yunnan dedicated to the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) and one of the few of its kind in China. It is also a vital resource for scholars and experts engaged in the study of wartime culture and history.
