Cai Weili, a celebrated Qinqiang Opera performer from Baoji, Shaanxi province, brought the traditional sounds of her art to the United Kingdom on May 25 in celebration of the Dragon Boat Festival.

Invited to perform at the UK Chinese Dragon Boat Festival in Salford Quays, Cai's performances received widespread acclaim, bridging cultural and linguistic divides through the universal language of music and art.

Before setting out on her journey, Cai faced concerns from friends about how her performance would be received by an audience unfamiliar with Qinqiang – a form of Chinese opera renowned for its strong Shaanxi flavor, ancient melodies, and elegant lyrics. Despite these uncertainties, Cai was determined to share her art with the world.

Equipped with her costumes, props, and decades of experience, Cai took to the stage in Salford. Her performance showcased her vocal prowess and her ability to convey the emotional depth of Qinqiang through expressive gestures and vivid storytelling.

The audience responded with enthusiasm, their applause resonating throughout the venue as they eagerly engaged with the cultural elements she presented.

Cai's journey to the UK was more than just a performance; it was an experiment to see if traditional Chinese opera could resonate with international audiences. Under the guidance of her mentor, Ma Youxian, Cai ensured that her performance was accessible and engaging for those unfamiliar with the art form.

Cai also introduced the audience to traditional Chinese cultural artifacts, including painted face masks and shadow puppets, further enriching their experience. Her efforts were met with praise from local officials, including the vice-mayor of Greater Manchester and the mayor of Salford, who expressed their admiration for the beauty and emotion of her performance.

The positive reception of Cai's performances in the UK underscores the power of cultural exchange and the universal appeal of traditional arts. This event highlighted the rich heritage of Qinqiang Opera and demonstrated its potential to connect people across cultural boundaries.
