Dragon boat teams from across Asia gathered in Hainan province over the weekend to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival, which falls on the fifth day of the fifth month in the Chinese lunar calendar, a tradition dating back centuries.

The 2025 "Haikou Cup" International Dragon Boat Invitational commenced on Saturday along Haidian River, drawing nearly 1,000 athletes from over 30 elite teams, including squads from Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines as well as across multiple Chinese provinces and regions.

Marking its upgrade to an international event, the competition featured an open division with eight powerhouse teams racing in 1,000-meter sprints. Notable contenders included Singapore's SG Dragon Boat Team, Malaysia's Kuching Dragon Boat Team and the Philippines' Klasiko Dragon Boat Team and regional champions from Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan. Local divisions showcased 16 Hainan-based teams in 500-meter heats, while a community bracket offered amateur crews 200-meter races.

Finals take place Sunday amid enthusiastic crowds.

Wang Ke, director of Haikou's bureau of tourism, culture, radio, television and sports, said the festival blends heritage with modern sports tourism. "This event isn't just about cultural pride - it's a catalyst for holiday spending and international sports partnerships," he said, signaling the goal to attract a more international tournaments.

Meanwhile, Sanya hosted 18 teams, including "Hello Sanya," a squad of expatriates averaging three years in the coastal city. Many work in digital media, reflecting the festival's widening appeal.
