The North China Military Region Martyrs' Cemetery is one of the best-known martyrs' cemeteries in China, noted for its early establishment, impressive scale and high construction standards. In the autumn of 1948, at the proposal of General Zhu De (1886-1976), it was built to commemorate the revolutionary martyrs who sacrificed their lives in North China during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45) and the War of Liberation (1946-49). It was completed and opened to the public in 1954.

For visitors, this site offers a solemn and deeply historical experience, showcasing impressive memorial architecture while providing insight into the sacrifices made for China's independence. It serves as a place of remembrance and learning, welcoming guests who wish to pay their respects and explore an important chapter in China's modern history.

In the cemetery, 318 revolutionary martyrs of the rank of regimental commander or above who sacrificed their lives in North China during various revolutionary historical periods are buried. The ashes of more than 650 martyrs and veteran Red Army soldiers are also interred here. Among those interred here are the famous internationalist fighters Dr. Norman Bethune of Canada and Dr. Dwarkanath Kotnis of India.

After the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, according to the needs of the development of the war situation, in May 1948, the Shanxi-Chahar-Hebei Military Region was abolished, and the North China Military Region was established. During the War of Liberation, the Party members, military forces, and civilians in the whole region made great sacrifices and contributions to the liberation of the Chinese nation and the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949.
