What did the Northern Song (960-1127) capital really look like? New archaeological discoveries at the Jinglong Gate site in Kaifeng, Henan, help reveal the layout of Dongjing, the capital of the Northern Song Dynasty.
This is the first inner city gate site ever unearthed from the Dongjing city site and the largest capital gate ruin with the highest level from that period found in China so far, a splendid example of late Northern Song official architecture.
The site also clearly uncovers layers of city walls and structures spanning the Tang (618-907) and Five Dynasties (907-960) through the Northern Song, Jurchen Jin (1115-1234) and Ming (1368-1644) dynasties, vividly telling the story of Kaifeng's transformation through the centuries.
