With origins in Buddhist art, the Kalavinka (literally ”melody bird” in Sanskrit) dance brings to life the mythical bird with a human head and bird’s body from Dunhuang murals. Flourishing during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), these ethereal figures—adorned with crowns and sweeping wings—embody music, devotion, and elegance. Blending Indian, Central Asian, and Chinese influences, the dance is a soaring tribute to beauty, faith, and cultural harmony through the ages.
