The Kunming Museum is a comprehensive regional museum covering over 20,000 square meters. Its design incorporates elements of traditional Chinese architecture, such as columns reaching the roof and dougong (interlocking wooden brackets), creating a classical and elegant appearance.
In 2002, the museum's Phase I project was awarded first prize for outstanding architectural design in Yunnan for its distinctive style.
The museum houses an extensive collection of artifacts, including bronzes, ceramics, calligraphy and paintings, modern and contemporary relics, and fossils. As of 2022, the collection comprised 12,337 pieces and sets, including 730 precious items.
The museum's permanent exhibitions feature the bronze culture of the Dianchi area, highlighting artifacts from royal tombs and burial sites, such as the No 71 Shizhaishan Tomb in Jinning county and the Tianzimiao Tombs and Shibeicun Tombs in Chenggong district.
The porcelain collection exhibit displays blue-and-white porcelain from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), including locally crafted pieces from Yunnan's Jianshui and Yuxi kilns and those brought in by migrating military settlers from Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province.
Another highlight is the cultural relics exhibition of the "Flying Tigers", which displays iconic items such as a Flying Tigers leather jacket, aircraft models, water bottles, holsters, military knives, flight goggles, and historical documents.
The museum also features three temporary exhibition halls that provide diverse and enriching experiences for visitors.
